Beyonce and Kim Kardashian crossed paths at Serena Williams’ wedding on Thursday, but an article claiming they had an “icy exchange” is fake news. Gossip Cop can explain how one webloid took another outlet’s reporting and twisted it into inaccurate clickbait.

On Friday, E! announced in a headline, “Kim Kardashian and Beyonce Come Face-to-Face at Serena Williams’ Wedding for the First Time After Kanye and Jay-Z’s Fallout.” The publication reported, “Onlookers tell us Bey and Kim were standing at the VIP bar together, ordering a glass of champagne before celebrating the bride. Kim looked chic in a long, black cocktail dress with her hair in a low ponytail, while Bey donned a long-sleeved green gown with a plunging neckline and a high ponytail. They were joined by several of their closest friends, including: Ciara, Kelly Rowland, La La Anthony and Bey’s mama Tina Knowles. However, neither Jay-Z nor Kanye were in attendance.”

That was all the information provided. The outlet said nothing about the conversation that transpired or how the two women acted towards one another. Yet HollywoodLife is now blaring, “Beyonce & Kim Kardashian Had An ‘Icy’ Exchange At Serena Williams’ Wedding.” The quote marks around “icy” suggest that description came from somewhere or someone. But “icy” doesn’t actually appear anywhere in the body of the site’s article, nor was it used in the original report.

“Hoo boy, do we have some drama to discuss today,” HollywoodLies, as its known, goes on to write, even though nothing remotely dramatic was reported. The blog asserts, “Just imagine what would happen if Kim and Beyonce ran into each other for the first time since their husbands started fighting. Just kidding, you don’t need to imagine a single thing because it JUST HAPPENED FOR REAL. That’s right, Kim and Bey ran into each other at Serena Williams’ wedding and it was just as awkward as you expected it to be.”

But HollywoodLies never says what exactly was “awkward,” just like it never explains why the exchange was “icy.” E!, which the online publication credits as the source of this information, never used the word “awkward” in its reporting, just as it never described the encounter as “icy,” either. In fact, after alleging out of nowhere that there was an “icy” and “awkward” moment with “drama,” the webloid actually flip-flops, writing, “Luckily, they appeared to put aside whatever issues they may have with one another to honor the tennis all-star’s special day.”

To be clear: HollywoodLies took the basics of the E! report, but regurgitated the information with a sensational spin that has no substantiation. The site isn’t even claiming to have its own “source” talking about what went down. It literally copied the original story, but dressed it up with buzzwords like “icy,” “awkward” and “drama.” It makes for a clickable headline, but the blog is majorly guilty of taking real news and turning it into fake.
